Mozart! — The Musical
Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay created the musical MOZART! with two goals in mind:
- to do away with misconceptions and idolatry around the icon Amadeus, and
- to explore the composer’s historical persona from a contemporary viewpoint.
Considering our ongoing obsession with child stars, this tale is as timely as ever. It’s a story about growing up under pressure…
On one side, an overbearing parent and the desires of a selfish society. On the other hand, the struggle of a young genius on his path to manhood and creative development.
While all of us have to leave childhood and find our ways in a world full of danger and seduction, our Wunderkind faced the most difficult obstacle of all: He was branded as the greatest child star ever known to society. Nobody wanted him to change — not even his own father.
As only the audience and Mozart himself are allowed to witness on stage — the child Amadé forms an ever-present shadow over Wolfgang’s adolescent years. The icon keeps writing furiously while the human behaves like any young man in all history: He experiments with drinking, loving, dreaming, and, well, growing up.
Both Kunze and Levay abhor “Classic Pops”. Whenever the child plays the piano, the audience listens to authentic Mozart music. The young man’s struggle, however, is accompanied by Sylvester Levay’s inimitable modern tunes and arrangements.
Since its 1999 Austrian premiere, the drama musical Mozart! has conquered the musical theater world via Hungary, Germany, Sweden and Japan. Honored with highest theatrical awards, Mozart! has become a cult musical in its own right.
